Expect a new look Etihad Stadium

When the Melbourne Renegades approached Etihad Stadium management about the jumbo screens which are set to be installed next week, they jumped at the opportunity.

The next question is whether the AFL, who recently purchased the stadium, will use the jumbo screens for marquee games throughout the season.

Etihad Stadium CEO Michael Green says there has not been any contact from the AFL regarding the jumbo screens at this stage, however there’s been plenty of dialogue between the stadium and the league about ways to improve the fans experience.

‘Now that the AFL own it, we have been discussing a lot of things,’ Green told 3AW’s Sports Today program.

‘We’re certainly looking at a raft of initiatives with the AFL both for the short term and the long term, including a full redevelopment of the stadium.’

One challenge the Stadium is set to face ahead of the AFL’s opening round, is whether the turf will be up to playing standard following two Adele concerts the week before.

The international superstar has two sold out concerts at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19.

St Kilda is set to host Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in round one of the AFL season the following week.

Green is confident the surface will be up to scratch by the time the ball is bounced.

‘Absolutely. It’s not unusual for us to do significant turf replacements,’ he said.

About one fifth of the stadium’s turf will be replaced, a job which Green says is not an issue.

‘You can actually replace the turf and play on it that night, so we’ve got plenty of time and we’ll be ready to go.’
