Injured Melbourne ruckman Max Gawn says he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Speaking to the boys on Football Preview, Gawn says he is giving himself four more weeks.

“The good thing was I didn’t actually hurt the hamstring too much, just a split from the bone to the tendon,” Gawn said.

“I don’t do things small, I stayed on the park for about 80¬†games in a row, but when I get injured I stay out for a while.”

With fellow teammates Colin Garland and Jack Spencer on the sideline, Gawn says watching the team play well makes it easier.

“When you’re 18 – 19 trying to get a game you almost curse yourself when the team goes well because you aren’t going to get in.

“Now I am at that stage where I would rather see them win.”

Gawn has also praised the rise of midfielder Clayton Oliver, currently in the top three of the AFL Coaches Association Votes and in Brownlow discussion.

However the charismatic ruckman says he is getting slightly ahead of himself.

“His head is quietly exploding.

“He is a star, I have never seen someone come in with cleaner hands.”
