It’s fair to say Kerrin McEvoy’s household is an exciting place to be at the moment.

The Sydney based family are looking forward to Monday, when McEvoy’s wife Cathy Payne is due to give birth.

Today they celebrate the Melbourne Cup victory by McEvoy, who rode Almandin home at Flemington.

Despite the birth being just around the corner, Payne has given her husband ‘the night off’ to celebrate his big win.

‘She’s let me come down here to Melbourne and get the job done, so thanks to you Cathy,’ McEvoy told 3AW Sports Today.

Back in Sydney, Cathy admits it was tough to stay still throughout the race.

‘I was trying to relax all day because I was thinking Kerrin will actually kill me if I went into labour,’ Payne also said on the program.

‘This poor baby would have had quite a jiggle along watching that race.’

It is the second year running that the family have has reason to celebrate on the biggest day on the Australian racing calender, given Cathy is the sister of 2015 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne.

As Almandin crossed the finish line by such a narrow margain over Heartbreak City it was an image which will no doubt become iconic in racing.

Heartbreak City’s jockey Joao Moreira gave McEvoy a pat on the back in what was an act of pure sportsmanship.

Moreira’s act didn’t go unnoticed by McEvoy.

‘We both had our chance and the best horse won. You could sense that Joao was happy for me to get the job done,’ he said.
