A new weapon has emerged as residents take up arms amid a wave of home invasions.

Last year it was revealed residents in Melbourne’s west had begun arming themselves with baseball bats, with vigilante groups hunting the streets to drive down crime.

But Narre Warren North local Clive was looking for something a bit safer.

He’s among the dozens of residents now armed with an airhorn.

Leader Newspapers revealed it was the brainchild of army reservist Steven Archibald, who’s bought almost 50 of them at roughly $19 each.

Nobody is understood to have used one yet.
