Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton says a security meeting to discuss what additional measures are needed at the Grand Prix will take place in the wake of the terror attack in London.

Police have already committed additional numbers to the season-opener at the MCG tonight along with all other AFL matches and major events on in Melbourne.

Assistant Commissioner Graham Ashton told Neil Mitchell they had discussed with Grand Prix officials the risk of someone using a vehicle in a terror attack before events in London.

‘We already have a good security overlay which includes planning for this type of attack. The next security meeting for that is this morning,’ he said.

He said there will be more police stationed at Parliament House this morning. 

He said Melburnians can expert heightened security measures and more bollards in the wake of the Bourke Street tragedy and the events in London.

‘You’ll see more security treatments,’ he said.

‘(But) we don’t want to turn Melbourne into a fortress, we don’t want it to look like a fortress.’
