Security fence to be built around MCG

It’s been confirmed the MCG will be surrounded by cyclone wire fencing and all patrons will undergo surveillance checks in new anti-terror measures.

The ring of steel around the perimeter of Melbourne’s most iconic landmark will be erected in time for Sunday’s Big Bash match between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder.

All fans undergo bag checks and ‘wanding’ – a hand-held metal detection system.

The wire fence will be about 20 metres back from the stadium and 1.8m high.

Each of the access points will contain a private area to accommodate any patron who does not want to be scanned in public view. There will also be express lanes for patrons who do not bring bags.

‘The perimeter and security measures implemented will be similar to those used at the MCG during the 2006 Commonwealth Games and comes as Australia’s most iconic stadium seeks to provide a safer environment for all patrons, following the terrorist incident in Paris in November, and particularly at Stade de France,’ the MCG said.

3AW Breakfast’s Rumour File was made aware of the plan on Wednesday, before Tony Jones reaffirmed the claim on 3AW Mornings yesterday.

Large concrete blocks and metal structures have since arrived outside the ground.
