Stoush must end with fairly: Fagan

The current pay stoush between the AFL players and the league itself needs to be resolved with a reasonable balance, according to Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan.

While the players are demanding a set percentage, and threatening strike action if they don’t get it, Fagan understands the AFL’s obligation to look after the overall code first.

‘The AFL has to contribute funds to community football and all other elements of the game,’ Fagan told 3AW’s Sports Today program.

‘What the AFL has to do is what’s best for the common good of the game.’

Having spent time coaching in the AFL system for nearly two decades, Fagan has seen first hand on a day to day basis the effort players put in just to get themselves on the park.

He believes they all deserve a fair outcome.

‘They train very hard, they put on a great show. They’re the reason why the fans show up,’ he said.

‘I guess they’re entitled to go for their fair amount of pay for what they deliver. As long as it’s reasonable.’

Before fagan joined the AFL system in a coaching capacity he played 263 games in the Tasmanian Football League, where he is in the Hall of Fame. His time in the game means he has a better understanding than most for what is a fair outcome.
