Young home buyers unfairly pushed out to Melbourne’s fringe
An expert in urban and regional planning says young home buyers are being unfairly pushed out to the outer fringes of Melbourne.
It comes as Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen is expected to paint a grim picture of housing affordability at a speech in Melbourne tonight.
In 1982 – 62% of people aged 25-34 owned their own home. In 2012, that had fallen to 42%.
‘Anyone who denies this nation doesn’t have a housing affordability problem has their head in the sand,’ Professor Roz Hansen said on 3AW Mornings.
‘Research indicates we are seeing an increasing number of people being pushed out into the fringe simply because of their income, nothing more and nothing less,’ she said.
